Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Knoll hat Physik und Biophysik an der Technischen Universität Karlsruhe und der Universität Konstanz studiert, war u.a. Laborleiter für "Exotische Nanomaterialien" am RIken Institut (Japan), Professor an mehreren hochrangigen Universitäten, langjähriger Direktor am Max Planck Institut für Polymerforschung (Mainz) und ist seit 2008 wissenschaftlicher Geschäftsführer des Austrian Institutes of Technology (AIT). Forschungsgebiete: Eigenschaften polymerer und bioorganischer Systeme in dünnen Filmen und funktionalisierten Oberflächen, Biomimetik.
